What a wonderful book! In 1962, America was still a segragated country. Stockett tells the story of the complicated relationship between maids and their employers in a way that is both readable and thought provoking. It is a gripping read that manages to be funny, sad and eye-opening at the same time.
Everyone I know who has read this gem of a book raves about it. Set in the southern state of America in the 1950’s, the story highlights the deep-seated racial prejudices practiced at that time in America. The housewives thought nothing of leaving the raising of their children to the negro maid while they indulged themselves playing bridge and enjoying long lunches daily. The maids endured false accusations, abuse and distrust from their employers while lovingly bringing up the babies and small children who come to adore them almost more than their own mother. When a young writer encourages the helpers to tell her of their experiences the drama begins. The terrified maids know that if their employer discovers what they are up to they will lose their much needed jobs but they are determined to disclose how badly they are treated. A gorgeous story with great drama and superb characters who remain in your heart long after the end.
