Lady Limbo, as the title suggests, is a book that keeps its reader in a constant and glorious state of suspension. Part noir, part love story, a cosmopolitan novel set (mostly) in Cape Town, it is imbued with an otherworldly quality that makes all attempts at classification seem somewhat futile. And it is brilliant. When Paola Dante’s husband, enigmatic French writer Daniel de Luc, disappears, she begins a quest to find him that takes her into the sordid underbelly of the Mother City, across the ocean to an unknowable Europe, and into the depths of cyberspace. As Paola searches for her lost love, she recalls the strange circumstances that brought the two of them together in the first place and, gradually, she realises that Daniel is not exactly who she believes him to be… To reiterate: brilliant.
