Sam is eight-years-old and has high-functioning autism. His parents are Alex and Jody, and their marriage is increasingly strained by the fact that Alex is unable to parent his son in any way. His response to Sam has always been fear and withdrawal. But, when Sam begins to play Minecraft, it provides an unexpected channel of communication for father and son. Minecraft helps Sam to build his vocabulary which in turn provides him with a means for sharing his feelings. And Alex’s participation in his son’s life provides him with the means to revisit a childhood trauma. There have been several award-winning novels written on the subject of autism; this one is up there with the best: wonderfully written, with well-developed and engaging characters.
