A fantastic ‘self-help’ book – with a difference! Self-help books can feel like you’re being conned by a travelling salesman punting happiness; not so with Ruby Wax’s latest title. Having now acquired a master’s degree in cognitive therapy, she is more than qualified to broach the topic of coping in the world, while having a bit of a giggle. Why, she asks, do we – as evolutionary superheroes – mostly land up fairly unhappy with our lot? The book is structured into twelve chapters titled: Evolution; Thoughts; Emotions; The Body; Compassion; Relationships; Sex; Kids; Addiction; The Future; Mindfulness Exercises and Forgiveness. In each chapter Wax gives an explanation and then ends it with a discussion with a Buddhist monk and a neuroscientist, each expert in their respective fields. Accessible, helpful, wise, honest and often very funny – everyone should read this book.
