Nesbo joins the Hogarth Shakespeare series with a fabulously re-imagined take on Macbeth. It is set in the 1970s in a fictional place, a grimly industrial town where half the inhabitants are addicted to a drug called Brew. Hecate, is the drug lord whose sole aim is to increase his wealth and he sees Macbeth as a key to achieving this. Macbeth is promoted to leader of the SWAT team and the police battle to keep order in a town where crime and drug abuse is so rife. Duncan is the Police Commissioner – a position Macbeth coverts, and which his girlfriend, the femme fatale known as Lady, assures him is his right to possess. The atmosphere is claustrophobic, and the tension builds as Macbeth turns the corner of morality and slowly becomes immersed in paranoia, guilt and the addictive drive for more and more power.
