A love story set in the 1700s in the Cape Colony: Lena, a young slave from Madagascar is the love of her owner’s son,Geert. Together they have a daughter who is unacknowledged, and kept within the confines of the household. But Geert marries a woman who can provide him with financial security and Lena gets placed in the invidious position of being stuck in the same household as her because he refuses to set her free. The lines between love and hate blur, and the story explores ideas of ownership, the losses incurred by slaves and colonial sense of entitlement. Case is the author of previous award-winning title: All We Have Left Unsaid, and lives in Cape Town.
