I blame Minette Walters for my insatiable taste in dark, psychological thrillers! It’s been over a decade since her last title, but the Last Hours is a complete change of genre to historical fiction. Set in 1348, and Lady Anne of Develish runs her demesne well in spite her tyrannical husband. The Black Plague arrives and she bars the entry to her moated manor house with all its inhabitants, knowing that isolation and hygiene is their best chance of survival. Even her ailing husband, returning from a visit to a neighbouring demesne, is refused entry. This creates even more enmity with her teenage daughter, who is very much her father’s child. Well-researched, well-written, absorbing and most enjoyable.
