Old-school horror and another masterpiece from King: The brutal (and frankly, difficult to process) murder of an 11-year-old boy and the evidence points conclusively to a Little League coach, English teacher and father Terry Maitland. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son was coached by Maitland, makes a quick arrest and yet the suspect proves to have an airtight alibi. He was seen at a conference miles away, and was caught on video attending it. Anderson is stumped, the conundrum hooks the reader instantly and from here King starts his slow-burn build of suspense and creepiness. The characters are multi-dimensional and interesting and his trademark wit, social commentary and plots within plots are all evident in this latest title. There is the added bonus of a character from Mr Mercedes emerging in the story too. Brilliantly constructed and ultra-compelling!
