Fans of Lauren Beukes will enjoy Sarah Lotz’ books. In a similar vein to Day Three and Day Four, two previous titles, The White Road toys with the reader in slow-building suspense and escalating creepiness. The supernatural hint is masterfully handled. Simon Newman is a flaky ex-adrenalin junkie, trying to launch his website. He decides to film a journey to Cwm Pot caves to see if he can find the dead bodies there, ensuring the success of his click-bait scheme. The outcome is he escapes barely alive and traumatised. But it works, and the footage goes viral. To maintain the popularity he then plans to film the dead bodies left on Everest. Well-plotted and convincing, Lotz keeps the reader guessing to the end.
