It is the 1960s in Britain and one night twins Maisy and Duncan witness their father hauling their mother out of the house and committing her to an asylum. They are sent to live with their grandmother in a forest. There they are left largely to their own devices and are free to settle down and get to know the new people in their lives. They make friends with Grace, a mysterious, reclusive woman who lives deep in the forest and about whom there are rumour of withccraft. But then Duncan goes missing, and his disappearance is linked to the murders of some other local boys, and Grace becomes a suspect. Maisy is left on her own to try find out what happened to him.
