A touted favourite on Oprah’s Book Club and getting rave reviews. Celestial and Roy are a young, newly-weds, when Roy is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. Roy is a hard-working, entrepreneurial black man who was showing every indication of realising his life’s goals: education, career and a happy marriage- the American Dream. But rather than limiting the focus of the novel on race-based injustice themes, Jones’ treatment extends beyond this frame. The result is a beautifully written story that explores the nature of love, marriage and loyalty, as much as the impact social inequalities can have on a family. Alone, without her husband, Celestial flounders, and becomes increasingly close to her childhood friend, Andre. Then Roy’s conviction is overturned and he must try and pick up his former life. The depth and complexity of the characters make this book something special.
