Published in September 2015, this delightful book has just been shortlisted by the SA Booksellers Association for the 2016 Booksellers’ Choice Awards. Set in Ladysmith in the Klein Karoo, Tannie Maria writes an agony column for the local gazette and includes restorative recipes which she dispatches freely with her advice to those in need of succour. She receives a letter from a woman who is being abused by her husband and then subsequently goes missing. Tannie M gets embroiled in the mystery, much to the annoyance of local investigator, Henk. Something of a cross between Miss Marple and a McCall-Smith; centered on food, mystery and romance this charming story has become a hit. It is also refreshing to read a story that is light, witty, quintessentially South African, and yet devoid of political content. And the best news is that Andrews’ next release in the Tannie M mysteries is imminent.
