Beekeeper Nuri and his wife Afra, an artist, live a rich and humble life surrounded by friends and family in the striking city of Aleppo, Syria. But with the sudden arrival of war, all that they know and cherish is destroyed. Their simple way of life is wrecked, and they are forced to flee into the unknown.
Struggling with the knowledge of everything they have lost, Nuri and Afra move through Turkey and Greece, facing heart-rending sacrifice and brutal danger, on their way to Britain where a cousin, and perhaps safety, awaits them. Inspired by the author’s time spent volunteering in a refugee camp in Athens, and by all the families and stories that she encountered there, The Beekeeper of Aleppo weaves a haunting tale from a crisis that has become all too familiar; a story of upheaval, loss and unspeakable destruction which keeps humanity firmly at its core.
