Continuing the Swedish crime theme, revived by The Girl in the Spider’s Web, this book too is receiving some excellent reviews since its release. Anton Svensson is a pseudonym for Stefan Thundberg and Anders Roslund. Thundberg is a celebrated Swedish screenwriter whose work includes Hennning Mankell’s Wallander series and, fascinatingly, whose own family of brothers were Sweden’s most infamous bank robbers; and (as if that wasn’t enough) Anders Roslund – of the bestselling duo Roslund & Hellstrom and award-winning investigative journalist.
The novel is based on a true story of 3 brothers and their friend who commit a series of robberies in an escalation of audacity and violence. They are relentlessly pursued by a detective whose own childhood mirrors that of the boys’: domestic violence and abuse. The brothers’ father casts a shadow in their lives making this a convincing portrait of the psychological damage handed down from father to son. This is a well-written and unusual crime novel with some interesting and thought-provoking complexities: highly recommended.
