Description

A fantastic debut novel loosely based on the Manson group murders, as seen through the eyes of lonely teenager Evie Boyd.  Set in Northern California at the end of the 60s, the story is told from Evie’s point of view as an older woman looking back to when she was part of the cult. Evie’s dysfunctional family life, her isolation and intense emotions are all contributing reasons for her being in thrall with the older, more confident, Suzanne, and the alternative source of love that the group provided. Cline limits her focus to a dark and painful portrait of an adolescent girl, rather than the notorious cult and its members. The psychological depth achieved by Evie’s impressions and intense emotions, set against knowledge of the horrific outcome make the novel compelling to the end. Highly recommended.
