Description

Do you remember Nicholls’s previous novel One Day? Well, Us is even better in my opinion. Longlisted for the Man Booker this year, it’s a warts-and-all family portrait. The protagonist is Douglas Peterson, an endearing, and mild-mannered biochemist. When he discovers his wife, Connie, plans to leave him along with his son’s departure for university, he embarks on an elaborate European tour with them in a last attempt to rekindle and repair his relations with both. The story is told in a series of episodes in a deft mixture of past and present, cleverly allowing the reader insights into the various characters. Nicholls’s story is warm, unsentimental, funny and gently tragicomic.
