This novel focusing on a group of rabbits living in the southern downs of England is far more epic than it sounds. When Fiver dreams of tunnels filled with blood, he tells the other rabbits in his warren that something bad is coming and that they should leave. Many rabbits ignore him, but Fiver’s charismatic older brother, Hazel, convinces a group to leave with him. A day later, the warren is destroyed by bulldozers.
The homeless rabbits then set out on a quest across the English countryside looking for a safe place to call their new home. The journey ahead of them is fraught with many obstacles, including crossing highways, avoiding predators and defending themselves against a rival warren of militaristic rabbits. What makes this book unique is the serious way the author treats the subject, giving the rabbits their own mythology and beliefs.
