This is an honest, gritty memoir by Strayed describing her grief over the death of her mother, her failure to make healthy decisions and her 1100-mile hike on The Pacific Crest Trail. The trail runs from California, through Oregon and ends on the border of Washington. The intense physical ordeal of the undertaking, the hardship and pain she encounters, is set against the sheer beauty of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountain Ranges, and allows her make a meditative journey too. She develops a love-hate relationship with “Monster”, her impossibly heavy rucksack. Days upon days of an existence stripped away to nothing but survival enable Strayed to find acceptance, and ultimately, serenity. Sometimes funny; sometimes harrowing; highly recommended – and for what it’s worth, about to be released as a movie.
