Much has been written, both historically and in fiction, about World War II. Somehow, though, Follett manages to show aspects of the conflict that you may not have known about, as well as giving us new perspectives on the more well-known events.

While this novel can be read and enjoyed on its own, this book does form the middle volume of ‘The Century Trilogy.’ Read as the middle volume of a trilogy, the reader gets a fuller picture of the characters’ relationships and the cause-and-effect of world history.
