Financier, empire builder and former Prime Minister of the Cape Colony (1890-1896) Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) curated a private library at his home, Groote Schuur, in Cape Town. The house and library were bequeathed to the Colony and inherited by the Union of South Africa in 1910.
