South African History

South African history is shaped by the fight against apartheid. On 16 June 1976, students protested against unfair education and the use of Afrikaans in schools. Many were killed, including Hector Pieterson.

This day is now commemorated as Youth Day, and June is Youth Month, honouring the courage of the 1976 youth and their role in the struggle for freedom.
