The Road of Excess
Apocolyptic and burlesque, The Road of Excess is the story of two brothers - Aaron and Stefaans Adendorff - the one an ailing artist, the other a recovering addict. When Aaron's gallerist, Eddie Knuvelder, abandons him, Aaron's world is turned upside down. His tragi-comically beleaguered mind is sent into a spiral by his manic brother's SMS broadsides, not to mention the outrageous manipulations of Bubbles Bothma, his new neighbour.
Winterbach's narrative alternated effortlessly between comic exuberance and a compulsive reckoning with the underworld of calamity and death.
Die Benederyk, the Afrikaans edition of this novel, was awarded the M-Net Price in 2011. The novel has been translated into English by award-winning author and translator, Leon de Kock.
